Tip of the day: How to HELP prevent color Fade.
1. Do NOT Shampoo with extremely HOT water. It opens up the hair cuticle and allows the chemicals to strip out the color.
2. Wait as long as you can after your color BEFORE shampooing your hair for the first time. AT LEAST 24-48 hours. The longer you wait, the more it has time to stain your hair cuticle.
3. Do NOT shampoo everyday! This enhances the "Fade factor" and you will find yourself coloring more often and your hair will become more porous and dry. Dry hair or porous hair will fade quicker.
4. Be sure you cover your hair when you are out in the sun or in a tanning bed. UV Rays are the death of hair color. If you don't have a towel for the tanning bed, just pull your shirt over your hair. Anything is better than nothing at all. PROTECT YOUR HAIR!!
5. Spray a leave in conditioner in your hair before you go out in the sun or go swimming. You will be getting a "heated" deep conditioning treatment from the sun and the conditioner on your hair. For BLONDES, wet your hair and rub some conditioner on it to prevent chlorine from going into the hair and preventing the "green" look from the pool. Chlorine dries out all hair and is a killer on the ends of hair.
6. Be sure you are using a good quality shampoo and conditioner for your hair. You need a good hairspray too with UV Protectants to help keep your color from fading.

Update & Tips of the day
It has been a while! I apologize!! BUT, if you like the page on Facebook, you can easily see the "Tip of the Day" posted if you check the page daily. There are GREAT tips posted. I try to post something for EVERY hair type and every hair issue I hear my customers bring forth to me. I also try to incorporate some easy ways to best utilize hair products they have at home to achieve the style they are looking for. With some of the Facebook changes the Page tips may not appear in your news feed, so be sure you like the page and hoover over the "LIKED" button for a second and then click "SHOW IN NEWS FEED" to assure that these tips WILL appear in your daily news feed. for your mouth, surely it is ok for outer use on your body. (It is also
good for cuts, scrapes, burns, etc) It is an antiseptic. Let it sit
for 3-5 minutes and rinse. Follow with a good conditioner and rinse
with cooler water. Style as usual. You can do this twice a week.

4. Tip of the Day: Big Hair is IN!! Here are some helpful hints on how to get voluminous hair.

When styling hair with flat irons or hot rollers, spritz roots with
an aerosol hair spray instead of a spritz. Aerosol tends to dry faster
and won't be as hard to brush out. Then tip head up side down &
shake. Volumizing styling products cause the hair cuticle to swell. Thus letting pollutants and excess heat, damage
the cortex of your hair. Use moisturizing, volumizing products. Good
quality salon volumizing products will not weigh yout hair down.
Use a lightweight volumizing conditioner everyday! YES, you must still
condition your hair. As above, volumizing products swell the cuticle.
Therefore, you need to protect your hair! If your hair is weighed down

5. Tip of the Day: Hair loss after pregnancy or major medical procedures.... this is a common problem. ESPECIALLY AFTER PREGNANCY! Most new Mommies find it easiest to pull up their locks into ponytails and go. BUT BEWARE.... this can be doing more harm than good!! Hair tends to be fragile after pregnancy and stretching and pulling the hair will weaken it. Make sure those ponytails are LOOSE! No metal clips. Use cloth head bands instead to push your hair out of of your face and leave your hair down instead.
These are very good tips, simple but interesting.

Appointments & Cancellation Policy
Most of my clients are AWESOME and never, ever miss an appointment. This blog is mainly for new clients who call and want to book. I do have a cancellation policy in place. And for my standing clients, remember this policy. Please take my job into consideration. I do not have a steady paycheck, benefits, sick leave, paid days off.... etc. If someone is not in my chair, I'm left with no income. I am depending on those appointments to pay my overhead, rent, and for those products I've ordered to complete those booked and projected appointments.
Since August of 2011 it has been my policy to charge a missed
appointment fee to all persons who fail to keep their scheduled appointment(s)
unless I receive notice at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled appointment.
The fee varies depending on the time period reserved & service(s) that were
booked. With each missed appointment, I
am left with a minimum of a 2 hour slot allotted for a highlight, 1 hour for
color, 30 minutes for hair cut, and 2 hours or more for consultations or the
installation of extensions. I make
appointments to devote strict time for each and every customer so I don’t
overlap into each person’s pampering time, and that I don’t feel rushed causing
me to miss something very vital in my client’s service. I stay booked more than a few days in
advanced and it’s very rare I can take walk-ins anymore because of this.
I do make exceptions for true last minute emergencies, when
I receive timely notification there-of.
Each appointment is VITAL to my business, because unlike normal jobs, I
do not make a steady salary.
I apologize
for having to resort to this. My only other alternative is to raise prices for
those customers who keep their appointments and I do not think that is fair. I
attempt to keep my prices down, and missed appointments drive up my costs.

Helpful HOME Hair Styling Tips
Every stylist is asked "How can I do (insert your dream hairstyle or hair horror here)?" So I have decided to give my customers some of my most requested tips and hints and home remedies here.
1. Easy home remedy for dandruff or itchy scalp: Listerine. YES! I said Listerine, the mouthwash! Don't get the blue, or the new flavored kind. Get the old fashioned original kind. It can even be the generic from the Dollar General. Shampoo your hair with your regular shampoo and rinse, and then pour a little listerine (usually a cup) over your scalp and let it sit for 3-5 minutes. It will be cooling and soothing. Then rinse. You may want to follow with a conditioner if you usually do, or even if you don't because it can be a little drying to your hair. I don't recommend using it more than twice a week unless you have severe dandruff just for this very fact. In 2 to 3 uses, you'll see the flakes are gone. Listerine is a wonderful antibacterial agent. GREAT for cuts, burns and scrapes. Good for eczema and staph on the skin.
2. Brassiness in the hair. Use a blue/purple toned shampoo like Shimmer Lights. You can usually find this at Sally's. RUSK makes an AWESOME version with great shine factor. It has to be purchased in a salon. The purple counteracts yellow and brassy tones in blonde hair. Because of the blue/purple tones the shampoo doesn't need to be used every day.
3. Build up on the hair. Usually caused by product. Be careful if you have dark or fresh colored hair. It can dull the color. Use a good conditioner. If you have dark hair, I'd recommend just using a daily clarifying shampoo to remove build up, or just a light sprinkle of baking soda.
4. Want to perk up curls. Comb your hair while your shampoo or conditioner is in and you are in the shower and don't comb it anymore once you are out. Scrunch your hair, DO NOT RUB with the towel! Scrunch up with the towel. Add a tablespoon of sea salt to a mister bottle of water and spritz on the hair lightly. Scrunch up the ends lightly with your fingers. Add your gel or hair products. Again, scrunch up with the towel, removing as much moisture as you possibly can with the towel itself. Be careful not to rub and to keep the curls define with the scrunching. Once the hair is about 80-90% dry, spray lightly with a scrunch gel. Use diffuser at roots. Finish with a hairspray.
5. Rocker waves. First work some texture balm through your palms to warm it up and really work it into the strands of your hair. Too much will weigh the hair down, so don't get too much. Remember....... Less is More! Flip the hair over and spray a little scrunch gel into your hair. (yes, scrunch gel into your dry hair) You don't want frizzy hair making your rocker style looking sloppy, do you???
6. Quick fixes. Dry Shampoo! Yes! It is the latest and the greatest invention. But avoid the powder based stuff and go for the higher grade Big Sexy Hair which is Clay based. You don't want that Talcum build up on your hair from the cheaper stuff I've seen in some stuff. It just feels gross!!!! Yucky. I couldn't WAIT to wash my hair. What's the point!? My favorite is Big Sexy and TIGI BedHead. They have done it right and it smells divine! Big Sexy even adds alot of volume to the hair which people LOVE!
7. Want to avoid green tint in blonde hair during the summer? Wet the hair before getting in the pool and add a little conditioner to the ends. It does 2 things. It pre-soaks the hair so it can't absorb anything else, AND it adds conditioners to the hair, and allows the sun to penetrate for a deep conditioning treatment. But really the conditioner seals the porous ends and coats it so the chlorine can not go into the hair shaft.

Pravana Perfection Smoothing System
Keratin treatments have exploded in popularity in the past few years. Women have raced to the salon to try them in order to tame their frizzy manes. Some are misinformed. Some have NO IDEA what chemicals are being applied to their hair. And MOST have no idea what toxins they may be inhaling! Boatloads of women have gotten hooked on the way these “treatments” turn their frizzy curls into sexy, smooth, silky tresses. Then the hair is blown dry. This takes no time because the treatment cuts down drying time by 50%. Then the solution is flat-ironed into the hair to seal in the solution.
Blonde hair is usually duller in appearance than brunette hair because it does not reflect the light as well. But this treatment will enhance light reflection and make blondes have more shine than normal.

Balayage Colors
People often ask the difference between traditional foiling and the artistry of hair painting. Not only is the result or hair painting far more beautiful but it is much healthier for the hair. Aluminum foil is a conducter of heat which almost bakes the bleach into the hair creating a very brassy effect .
Hair Painting is a process that requires training. Be sure your stylist has practiced this and you've seen pictures of their work or know a client of theirs who has had this process done!!
Originating in France, the word “Balayage” translates to “sweeping”, and the actual sweeping of color can be placed more exactly on the hair. As a colorist we can place the highlight more exactly where nature intended it to be. The result from using foils can be color that has obvious strips of color that can look brassy or too white. The art of hair painting is a process that gives more dimensional natural looking color.
The beauty of Balayage is you can embrace a natural hue or natural color without feeling drab, because you can still have the enhancements of highlights. Essentially, balayage involves painting sections of the hair freehand, rather than using foils or a streaking cap. The end result is a sexy “grown out” look that takes literally minutes to achieve, and requires less maintenance than traditional highlights. What's hot for 2012?
New Year, New YOU! For 2012 Natural looks are back!!! Subtle highlights that are very blended are great and require very little investment and upkeep. Ombre highlights are all the rage with the stars like Jessica Biel, Sarah Jessica Parker and Khloe Kardashian. They are subtle highlights on the ends of the hair that are just 2 or 3 levels lighter than their natural color, and are not close to the top of the hair or the roots, so they provide elements of movement and dimension within the hair. It's great for thinner hair and gives a look of thicker, fuller hair.
Not sure you want blonde? Don't worry. The chocolates haven't faded out! Deep mocha's and chocolates are still in. Naturals are here for awhile because the economy has been hit so hard, people aren't going to the salon for those highlights and colors the way they used too. Go Mocha!!
Curls are back! No, not your Grandmother's old perms!! So, don't go freaking out. Loose, natural waves. So girls, you can stop worrying about damaging your hair so much with those flattening irons. I've already been putting my big perm rods to use this year already! It's amazing how fast beach waves hit this area, but it's great for ladies here, with our humidity in the south. Curls just work better in South Alabama. So Good News on the hair front here. Natural looks are here for 2012!! Natural colors, Natural Curls!! Throw away the harsh stuff and let your natural beauty show.

Color & Perms while Pregnant??
To Color or not to color........ that is the question......... Pregnant women want to look good too!!! And why not!? Yes, it is safe! Doctor's tell you "NO" because of 1) the smells. Pregnant women are often sensitive to smells. So ask the stylist if he/she has an "odor free" or very mild color or highlight to use on the hair. 2) Hormones DO play havoc on the body and it does show up in the hair!! SO, what used to take one way in your hair when you were not pregnant MAY NOT take the same way in your hair while you ARE pregnant. You may take longer to process. Therefore you may want to opt for highlights thru the cap to keep color off the scalp, because you may be more sensitive. OR you may want to do a demi permanent color that tones down old highlights and fades out gradually in 4-6 weeks with no lines definitely showing. The peroxide won't be so harsh on your scalp and your doctor won't be so concerned with the chemicals touching your skin that way. My Demi-permanent color doesn't have ammonia. I use Deep Shine by RUSK. It's made with Bio-Marine Therapy and give the Ultimate conditioners and shine because the colors come from sea pigments. There is virtually no odors. It's safe for anyone with breathing problems or who is with child. I, myself, have asthma; so I am extremely careful about what products I use in my shop daily!!

Extensions
Well, it has been CRAZY since I've been back!! I've answered a TON of questions about extensions to clients. Price wise, it will depend entirely on the length, amount of hair used and method of installation. There are 2 methods I am using, but I am Certified on ALL methods by Cinderella Hair. The most affordable method (because it requires less time to apply the hair) is the T-Hair method or Tape method. It's bonded to your hair with a keratin tape. This is completely safe and WILL NOT cause hair breakage like the old glue in methods, because the hair can move and breathe. Your own hair has keratin, and therefore keratin will bond to keratin for a safe & secure hold. It will stay in 3 months to 6 months in most cases with proper maintenance. Again, this hair is re-usable at least one more time, so you can get up to 6 months to a year out of this hair if you follow the instructions Cinderella Hair and I provide. Most clients LOVE the Tape hair for just adding a little body or highlights to their hair. One pack or so for a little extra "oomph" can offset one or two highlight appointments in a year! Just a thought......

Cinderella Hair Extensions Training
I made it to Birmingham today, 10/24/11 to spend the night and get up bright & early for the Cinderella Hair Extensions Training & Certification Class. I have had SO MANY clients ask me about Hair Extensions over the past 6 months to a year that I decided it was time to get serious about doing some research into hair extensions. I've looked at the time, expense, material involved in numerous name brands and companies. I've looked at the hair, felt of it, seen some people who have had the hair extensions put in and asked what type or where they had it done and I actually CALLED a few salons to find out what type of hair extensions they used. Most times because they looked poor quality after being worn for months and I don't want MY CLIENTS looking like that. After a year long search, reading, researching and attending numerous hair shows along with hearing sales pitches & watching video's, I have decided to use Cinderella Hair.
Why Cinderella Hair company? They have been in business since 1994. WAY before the new hair extension craze come about. So, these "Johnny come lately" companies aren't as established as Cinderella hair and I'm afraid they may not be in business later down the road when I need a rep for assistance. Cinderella Hair also only sells to licensed cosmetologists who establish an account in a salon AND that have attended their training. So you can't find this hair on E-Bay or in Sally's and have a "Kitchen Cosmetologist" put in your hair from her house. If the stylists don't meet their certification requirements they aren't allowed to buy or use Cinderella Hair or their tools. They have standards! I have standards and I love this about their company.
They offer only 100% Remy hair. That means the hair cuticle is facing in the same direction which prevents tangling and matting. Remy hair allows the blending with your own hair to give the appearance of natural, healthy looking hair.
They also use an organic bonded tip in one method of application which allows for damage free application and removal of the hair extensions. In the tape method, they use a keratin bond tape and it's damage free. If you are already a client of mine, then you know how important this is to me in a product. You fully understand how I rave about the Keratin relaxers and the keratin shampoo's. This is a damage free tape that will stay in the hair for 4-6 months!! AND they are RE-USABLE!!! We can take them out and use them again. You can get 2 or 3 uses out of the hair IF it's taken care of.
The color possibilities are endless with this company. If you want highlights, but don't want to damage your hair, this is the way to go! Want a funky hot pink streak?? This is the hair to do it! Blue? Got it too. Dark underneath and light on top? We can do that too.
I am so excited to get started in the morning. Can't wait to see all the ways to use this hair and finally do a whole head of extensions on a mannequin and create a style. In honor of my niece who went with me to the Birmingham hair show, and wants her beautiful long hair even longer for her Senior prom (and has pushed me to do extensions) I will name my mannequin for the Cinderella Hair Extensions Class "Shelby #2".

Finding the right stylist!
Wow! I remember ALWAYS being in search for that "right" stylist! Even when I found one I really liked, I always seemed to see a friends hair and say "I wish my stylist could do that to my hair!" Here are some helpful tips.
1. If you are impatient and wait til the last minute, then you more than likely won't get in with a more experienced stylist unless you just LUCK UP and they have a cancellation. So BE CAREFUL about waiting to the last minute and being impatient. If you just "HAVE to have your hair cut THAT DAY", then you will get what you pay for! Most stylists that have experience do have a steady stream of loyal customers who don't want to miss out on their time and cherish their stylist and they are willing to wait a day or two or sometimes even a week to get in with their stylist!! Book ahead for your cut or color.
2. If you go to a new place, look for the State Board Inspection & Citation Report. (My Score has never been less than a 100) It is REQUIRED to be displayed for the public to see. If it's not visible, ask to see it. You can see what state board has found the salon in violation for. (ex. contamination, disinfection problems, etc.)
3. Look to see if the stylist is licensed or student. If they are a student then there has to be a managing Cosmetologist on duty. Ask how much experience the student has. Some people don't feel comfortable with a student cutting their hair. Some are fine with it. But the public has a right to know.
4. Once you get to the chair, make sure the stylist ask questions that make you feel comfortable. "Are we changing styles today?" "Do you want me to trim and how much?" Make sure the stylist shows you how much before they make the initial cut if it's a new stylist just to put you at ease. If you are changing styles they need to ask "How much time do you spend on your hair?" and questions about styling products and tools, etc. If they don't ask these types of questions then there is a break down in a communication and you will more than likely be dissatisfied with your style.
5. Ask your stylist questions! If the stylist isn't aware you aren't understanding what he/she is talking about then they may just go on to the next step in the process and you may not be happy with the service. Or maybe it's still that break down in communication, stop the stylist and ask what you are concerned about.
6. Find out about the products or chemicals BEFORE the stylist puts them on your hair. Don't wait until after the process. If you are concerned about damage, please bring those concerns up first and allow the stylist to address them. If the stylist can't tell you about the ingredients or color or product he/she is about to use then stop the process from going any further. Find another stylist to perform the color or chemical process. You want to be sure your hair is kept safe!!
7. Just because a stylist is expensive doesn't necessarily mean they are the best!! You may just be paying for atmosphere. Keep that in mind. Stylist who aren't in a Franchise can set their own price. Just because a stylist is affordable doesn't mean they aren't skilled. Maybe they are catering to all levels of society.
8. If you have a special event coming up, pre-book. You won't be the only girl going to that homecoming dance, prom or pageant; so get the jump!! Be the smart one and book way in advance and your stylist will appreciate it. You two can communicate about what works with your face shape, hair texture, and dress. It allows time for maybe a practice session or two. You BOTH will benefit. It's worth it!! Pre-booking alleviates stress on you and the stylist.

Ombre Highlights
It looks like the ombre hair color trend might actually be here to stay...at least for a little while longer. That’s great news if you color your hair, since the upkeep is less frequent than traditional highlights (and, hence, easier on the pocketbook). Just don’t expect to see drastic two-toned shades this upcoming Fall 2011 season. Instead, opt for color that looks more natural and gradually changes tone, says Jose Eber Salon Senior Hairstylist and Colorist Karen Smith. Here, she shares tips if you're thinking of trying ombre hair color.
Find your inner surfer girl: For a natural ombre effect that feels more surfer girl, than a rock star, Smith recommends only going about 3-4 shades lighter at the ends of your hair. Also, adding a few light streaks of balayage (hand-painted highlights) from roots to ends will make your hair look more sun-kissed and keep the color flowing through your strands. “You just want it to start very natural at the roots and get heavier towards the bottom,” she says.
Maintenance is minimal, but it still exists: “You only need to [touch it up] a couple of times a year because you don’t get roots,” says Smith. But you should switch up your hair care to keep your strands looking healthy and the color vibrant. “I would definitely use a much more nourishing shampoo and conditioner on it because you are lightening the hair." Her favorite pick? “Phyto shampoo and conditioner always work," she says. "They’re really good and nourishing.”
Don't let bleach scare you: If you love ombre hair color, but you’re afraid the bleach might damage your hair, Smith says not to worry. “As long as there’s an experienced person bleaching it and they’re paying attention as it’s being done, the hair will not be destroyed,” she says.
Research is the key: Since ombre hair color is a newer technique, Smith recommends finding the right hair colorist. “Make sure they have done it before,” she says. “Show them a picture of what you like and make sure they’re on the same page with you. They have to be creative and have an eye for it.” Celebrities with ombre hair color she likes: Sarah Jessica Parker and Jessica Biel.

Thoughts from a Stylist
Over the years, I've had several things happen and I've sworn at some point in time I'd "have my say" or address it and let it work itself out. But instead, I've decided to post and maybe people can see things from a stylist point of view.
1. I work very hard for very little money. I don't think I charge enough in most cases. I do this job because I love it, and I try to keep my prices low because I know most people work hard for their money, but don't try to make me feel guilty when I do charge you appropriately for a foil job and it's still way cheaper than you would have gotten anywhere else. My prices are posted and adjusted on the length and thickness of the hair & the number of colors used.
2. Don't message me or email me for free hair advice and then go pay someone else to do your hair. I have been burned by that too many times, and from now on, unless you are one of my loyal customers I will ask that you call for a consultation unless it's a very generic question. Free hair advice would take up all of my time if I let it, and I need to pay my bills. Would you like it if I asked you to do part of your job for me for free?? It does hurt my feelings if I've spent 30 minutes or more and 5 emails replying thinking I've got a potential customer only to see 3 days later she's gone to a different salon and posting pictures of something I told her to do and paid someone else to do it!! And likely paid more than I would have charged!
3. Please don't ask me to donate or sponsor your charities if you don't patron my business. I support my customers and their causes.
4. If my customers do business with me, I will do business with them. That's just the way I work. But be warned..... once it stops, if someone else in the same business as you is a customer of mine & you have left me, this customer who is with me will get my business. It's only fair. I will do business with those doing business with me. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours!! If I don't have a customer in my chair, I don't get paid!
5. Please understand if I don't respond to a text, I have a shop phone. I don't answer my cell phone during work. I feel it's unprofessional and it's just difficult for me to handle it during a color or cut. The business phone is easier. Please use it during business hours. (334)446-0465. Also, please understand it's easier to discuss appointments over the phone, and I'd prefer phone calls over emails!! HINT!
6. Saturdays are by appointment only!! Appointments must be made by Wednesday or there won't be any Saturday appointments.
Please understand, I have a family too. Your work days may end at 5pm or so. Mine sometimes don't end until 8pm or after. I have to get my son off to school. We start at 6am and often I get in just in time to kiss him before he's completely asleep, or close just in time to rush and pick him up from karate. Standing 10 and 12 hours a day makes for an exhausting day. So, I do require an extra day every now and then. Tuesday's being closed doesn't necessarily mean I'm "off". I am picking up supplies for the shop, getting Trey for piano and karate, and trying to get shop towels cleaned for the week. It's not down time for me. So understand. It's not the usual "close up and forget it" job. People call me and want an appointment all hours of the day, 7 days a week, even at 10 and 11 o'clock at night. It's not something I ever get to escape. I don't mind it, I love my job!! But understand too, that sometimes I feel certain clients don't realize how they come across. They demand I immediately fit them in and get in a huff when I can't do it at the last minute! They fail to realize they are not my only client. I wish I could fit everyone in whenever they wanted, but I can't even give my family the time they demand sometimes. All I want to do is crash when I get home. I don't feel like socializing and when the weekend gets here, I want to sleep! So please understand I have a multitude of customers, and I do go out of my way to accommodate everyone's schedule. Every minute of my job is spent trying to please someone. I try very hard to do that. I LOVE what I do. I just hope everyone understands where I am coming from when I say "I need you to understand ________".

Color tips
How many of you walk out of the salon in LOVE with your color, but in 2 weeks wondering why it is looking drab and faded?? Here are a few tips to help you save your hair color.
1. Believe it or not, SHAMPOO and products DO matter!! Compare! If one of the first 3 ingredients of your shampoo says alcohol, then avoid it! Alcohol may help cleanse and increase lather, but it is harsh and strips the hair of oil and therefore strips your color. If you want salon looking color to last, then go with the better grade products. The cost may be a little more up front, but you will find that the products are richer and more concentrated and they don't take as much, so you use less. They will last longer. The cost will even out. You will spend less time at the salon because can possibly get an extra week or two between colors. Who doesn't want that???
2. If you are getting color (not highlights) try to wait 24-48 hours before shampooing your hair. This gives the color time to really penetrate and stain the hair shaft. The longer its sits in, the longer it will stay in the hair. Also if it is a little too dark at first, you may want to shampoo it in 24 hours to help lighten it a touch, but remember that during the first week after a hair color is when you get the major fade factor.
3. If you spend time in the tanning bed or outside, cover your hair. UV rays lighten the hair. Especially red hair. If you are in the tanning bed, just pull your shirt over your hair at least to protect it. It also is great in protecting the condition of the hair too, because UV rays remove vital moisture from the hair.
4. Whether or not your hair is oily, finish up with some type of conditioner to seal the hair. Blow dryers and flat irons or curling irons will deplete moisture from the hair, drawing out color with it. Protect it with a conditioner AND a thermal protectant.
5. If you use a flat iron or curling iron, ALWAYS start with the lowest setting and make sure the hair is COMPLETELY DRY!! If you want to see why you should be sure your hair needs to be dry, try dropping a wet spaghetti noodle on a stove element and watch what happens. This is wet hair on a flat iron. Same idea. Dry the hair completely and use a thermal serum or protectant. Seal the hair from heat.
6. Always try to go to the same Stylist or use the same color so you aren't overlapping different chemicals or formulas on your hair!! This could cause breakage.
7. If you are a BLONDE, BEFORE you get in chlorinated water, wet your hair and apply conditioner to PREVENT the absorption of chlorine. IF you do absorb some chlorine and your hair turns green, get some Aloe Rid or a good Clarifying shampoo or mix some Baking Soda with your shampoo. Allow it to penetrate your hair for several minutes. You may have to do this a couple of times. Follow up with a good conditioner.
Protecting your color will also protect the life of your hair if you are trying to let it grow out. You need to keep your hair healthy so that the longer it gets it remains strong enough to withstand heat, brushing, and basic everyday wear.

2. If you are getting color (not highlights) try to wait 24-48 hours before shampooing your hair. This gives the color time to really penetrate and stain the hair shaft. The longer its sits in, the longer it will stay in the hair. Also if it is a little too dark at first, you may want to shampoo it in 24 hours to help lighten it a touch, but remember that during the first week after a hair color is when you get the major fade factor.
3. If you spend time in the tanning bed or outside, cover your hair. UV rays lighten the hair. Especially red hair. If you are in the tanning bed, just pull your shirt over your hair at least to protect it. It also is great in protecting the condition of the hair too, because UV rays remove vital moisture from the hair.
4. Whether or not your hair is oily, finish up with some type of conditioner to seal the hair. Blow dryers and flat irons or curling irons will deplete moisture from the hair, drawing out color with it. Protect it with a conditioner AND a thermal protectant.
5. If you use a flat iron or curling iron, ALWAYS start with the lowest setting and make sure the hair is COMPLETELY DRY!! If you want to see why you should be sure your hair needs to be dry, try dropping a wet spaghetti noodle on a stove element and watch what happens. This is wet hair on a flat iron. Same idea. Dry the hair completely and use a thermal serum or protectant. Seal the hair from heat.
6. Always try to go to the same Stylist or use the same color so you aren't overlapping different chemicals or formulas on your hair!! This could cause breakage.
7. If you are a BLONDE, BEFORE you get in chlorinated water, wet your hair and apply conditioner to PREVENT the absorption of chlorine. IF you do absorb some chlorine and your hair turns green, get some Aloe Rid or a good Clarifying shampoo or mix some Baking Soda with your shampoo. Allow it to penetrate your hair for several minutes. You may have to do this a couple of times. Follow up with a good conditioner.
Protecting your color will also protect the life of your hair if you are trying to let it grow out. You need to keep your hair healthy so that the longer it gets it remains strong enough to withstand heat, brushing, and basic everyday wear.

Birmingham Hair Show
I hope you will follow this blog and I will try to keep something posted occasionally to offer tips and specials for all of the customers!
On Saturday Sept 17th I headed for Birmingham for the Premiere Birmingham Hair Show. This time I took my 17 year old niece (who is like my own daughter), Shelby with me. I wanted to get a "fresh" perspective on what is "hip" and what is "in" for people under the age of 30! I'm 38, and I know what's appropriate for my age range and I don't want to look "old" but I don't want to look like I'm trying to be a teenager either!! (And trust me........ I saw PLENTY of stylists trying to pull off THAT look this weekend!) I don't ever remember having as much fun as I had this weekend at any hair show, EVER! I didn't "party", because I don't party, and because I had an underage young lady with me. I got to enjoy the classes and training aspect of the show more than ever!
Many of you may have heard of Nick Arrojo. He's famous from TLC's "What Not to Wear". Well, I've been following him for years from back when he started at Vidal Sasson and then went on his own and opened up his on Arrojo Academy for Stylists to train, and Arrojo Salons. He has his own product lines, DVD's, and equipment. I watched his floor show and models in Orlando and was extremely impressed with his work, but it was SO CROWDED I couldn't really get up close to see the hands working to see the cutting or coloring techniques in detail like I desired. Sunday Shelby and I watched his models do their "Catwalk" and the Floor show was phenomenal! It was very Avant Garde! Not like the styles we'd be walking around with daily here in South Alabama, but impressive handy work for special occasions.
On Monday as we were walking in Nick Arrojo sent his assistant over to Shelby and me and asked Shelby if she would be one of his models! They LOVED her hair. They were impressed with the color and condition and length. They wanted to give her a more edgy cut, but leave the length. So we were honored!! She got a free $500 haircut, and still has long hair. And they gave me information and an application for Nick Arrojo's Academy.
What seems to be the newest trend as far as hair color is either accent pieces to accentuate the cut or partial foils to just put pieces or chunks of color in. Also blended highlights are back.
I'm HOPING the hair feather trend is ending, but right now it's still here! So I still have a few in. They are still $22 each. Also "Hair Bling" is the trend. It's Crystals that are ironed into the hair and stay in for 7 to 10 days. Great for proms or pageants. Girls just LOVE this!! It was CRAZY popular at the hair show.
Lots of new hair cut ideas in to create volume and softness around the face. Trendy and popular cuts for the young girls and sophisticated yet modern cuts for the ladies of all ages! So call me for the latest!!
